A MARKETING ANALYSIS OF U.S. CHICKEN EXPORTS TO CHINA AgEcon
Zhang, Li; Gunter, Lewell F..
China is the second largest market for U.S. poultry exports. The growth potential for chicken exports to China is great, given their large population, low per capita consumption, rising incomes, and recent inclusion in the WTO. In this study, we estimated excess supply and demand equations for US exports of frozen chicken parts to China.

A memory like a female Fur Seal: long-lasting recognition of pup's voice by mothers Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mathevon,Nicolas; Charrier,Isabelle; Aubin,Thierry.
In colonial mammals like fur seals, mutual vocal recognition between mothers and their pup is of primary importance for breeding success. Females alternate feeding sea-trips with suckling periods on land, and when coming back from the ocean, they have to vocally find their offspring among numerous similar-looking pups. Young fur seals emit a 'mother-attraction call' that presents individual characteristics. In this paper, we review the perceptual process of pup's call recognition by Subantarctic Fur Seal Arctocephalus tropicalis mothers. To identify their progeny, females rely on the frequency modulation pattern and spectral features of this call. As the acoustic characteristics of a pup's call change throughout the lactation period due to the growing...

A METHOD FOR COMPARISON OF THE EFFICIENCY OF COUNTRIES WITH DISTINCT TECHNOLOGIES AgEcon
Arnade, Carlos Anthony; Jones, Keithly G..
We divide countries into two technology categories: developed and developing. Agricultural efficiency within each technology category was calculated. Cross-category efficiency measures were developed and combined with own-category measures to develop a technical difference index. Results indicate convergence of efficiency within both categories but divergence of efficiency between the two categories.

A method for evaluating the extent to which farm subsidies can be de-coupled before profitable arable land is abandoned in the European Union AgEcon
Fraser, Rob W..
This paper evaluates concerns over the "abandonment of production" in the context of the recent CAP reform as it applies to the arable sector. The particular focus of the evaluation is on the extent to which the proposed "single farm payment" can be de-coupled from production and yet avoid the abandonment of land on which production is expected to be profitable. An analytical framework is developed which indicates the most important non-policy factors are the profitability of the land, the variability of yield and the grower's degree of risk aversion. The conclusion of a numerical analysis using this framework is that 85% de-coupling is unlikely to lead to abandonment of land in any arable region of the EU, and that 95% de-coupling is also unlikely to lead...

A methodological approach for the construction of a radiation hybrid map of bovine chromosome 5 Genet. Mol. Biol.
De Donato,M.; Brenneman,R.A.; Stelly,D.M.; Womack,J.E.; Taylor,J.F..
A bovine 5,000 rad WG-RH panel was used to construct an RH map of bovine chromosome 5 (BTA5). Twenty-one microsatellites and thirteen genes were scored in the panel using PAGE and radioactive labeling. Marker retention ranged from 8.9%-25.8% and averaged 17.8%. Pairwise locus analysis placed all markers in a single syntenic group with a LOD support of 4.0. At a LOD support of 8.0, a centromeric group of 23 syntenic markers was formed. Telomeric groups of 11 and 9 markers were assembled with a LOD support of 6.0 and 8.0, respectively. All markers were ordered by maximum likelihood methods using the program RHMAP. Only 13 markers were ordered with a LOD support of at least 3.0, while 25 and 29 markers were ordered with a support of at least 2.0 and 1.0,...

A Methodological Review of the Impacts of Risk and Trust on Consumer Behaviour Towards Food Safety AgEcon
Lobb, Alexandra E..
Consumers' attitudes to trust and risk are key issues in food safety research and attention needs to be focused on clearly defining a framework for analysing consumer behaviour in these terms. By creating a platform, or benchmark, it is hoped that more succinct policy programmes may be initiated to better communicate relevant issues to consumers. In order to achieve this, a detailed review of the recent literature surrounding risk, trust and, the relationship between the two must be conducted. This paper aims to collate the literature in the fields of consumer attitudes to trust and risk. It provides an insight into the economic and other modelling procedures available to measure consumers' attitudes to risk and trust in food safety and specifically notes...

A Methodology for Assessing National Sustainable Development Strategies AgEcon
Cherp, Aleg; George, Clive; Kirkpatrick, Colin.
At the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, governments undertook to develop and adopt national sustainable development strategies as a key component of implementing the goals of Agenda 21. Only partial progress was reported at the 2002 World Summit in Johannesburg, with uncertainty as to the effectiveness of those strategies that had been introduced. This paper describes a methodology for assessing a country's progress in implementing a national sustainable development strategy for (NSDS) and for identifying potential areas for improvement. Five key principles of sustainable development and strategic planning are identified, and a set of assessment criteria are proposed for each principle. The results of applying the methodology in two Eastern European countries,...

A Methodology for Evaluating How Product Characteristics Impact Choice in Retail Settings with Many Zero Observations: An Application to Restaurant Wine Purchase AgEcon
Durham, Catherine A.; Pardoe, Iain; Vega-H, Esteban.
An approach is developed to examine the impact of product characteristics on choice using a quantity-dependent hedonic model with retail panel data. Since panel data for individual products from retail settings can include a large number of zero sales, a modification of the zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) regression model is proposed for estimation. Results for this model compare favorably to results for alternative hurdle and negative binomial models. An application of this methodology to restaurant wine sales produces useful results regarding sensory characteristics, price, and origin/varietal information.

A model for the study of skeletal anomalies in rat fetuses BABT
Effting,Cristiane; Paula,Daniel Jesus de; Nunes Junior,Guilhermino Pereira.
The aim of this study was to validate a model of skeletal anomalies in rat fetuses by the administration of ketoconazole (80 mg/kg) to pregnant rats during organogenesis. Bones of the head, trunk and anterior and posterior limbs were examined for detection of anomalies. Statistical differences regarding the number of fetuses and postimplantation resorptions, and fetal and placental weight were significant. The frequency of skeletal anomalies in the head, trunk, and anterior and posterior limbs in the ketoconazole-treated group were also significant when compared to the control group. It could be concluded that the model suggested was valid for study of skeletal anomalies and abnormal bones development in rat fetuse, in spite of the loss of fetuses due to...

A model of chronic IgE-mediated food allergy in ovalbumin-sensitized mice BJMBR
Saldanha,J.C.S.; Gargiulo,D.L.; Silva,S.S.; Carmo-Pinto,F.H.; Andrade,M.C.; Alvarez-Leite,J.I.; Teixeira,M.M.; Cara,D.C..
Food allergy is most frequently the result of IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions. Here, we describe a chronic model in which some of the intestinal and systemic consequences of continuous egg white solution ingestion by ovalbumin-sensitized eight-week-old BALB/c mice, 6 animals per group, of both sexes, were investigated. There was a 20% loss of body weight that began one week after antigen exposure and persisted throughout the experiment (3 weeks). The sensitization procedure induced the production of anti-ovalbumin IgG1 and IgE, which were enhanced by oral antigen exposure (129% for IgG1 and 164% for IgE, compared to sensitization values). Intestinal changes were determined by jejunum edema at 6 h (45% Evans blue extravasation) and by a significant...

A Model of Producer Incentives for Livestock Disease Management AgEcon
Ranjan, Ram; Lubowski, Ruben N..
We examine the management of livestock diseases from the producers' perspective, incorporating information and incentive asymmetries between producers and regulators. Using a dynamic model, we examine responses to different policy options including indemnity payments, subsidies to report at-risk animals, monitoring, and regulatory approaches to decreasing infection risks when perverse incentives and multiple policies interact. This conceptual analysis illustrates the importance of designing efficient combinations of regulatory and incentive-based policies.

A model-based approach to moral hazard in food chains - What contribution do principal-agent-models make to the understanding of food risks induced by opportunistic behaviour? AgEcon
Hirschauer, Norbert.
Food risks may be caused by moral hazard, i.e. by opportunistic behaviour of upstream sellers who exploit the fact that many food product qualities remain uncertain to downstream buyers in the course of conventional market transactions (credence qualities). Due to this lack of market transparency buyers run the risk to pay premium prices for inferior products (quality risks); furthermore, they run the risk to use or consume substances which are harmful (health risks). Therefore, they will want to design optimal contracts and controls preventing opportunistic behaviour. Usually, however, buyers cannot contract contingent on the actions of upstream sellers because they cannot observe them directly (information asymmetry). Motivated by the obviously...

A modelling study of the respective role of hydrodynamic processes and larval mortality on larval dispersal and recruitment of benthic invertebrates: example of Pectinaria koreni (Annelida : Polychaeta) in the Bay of Seine (English Channel) ArchiMer
Ellien, C; Thiebaut, E; Dumas, Franck; Salomon, Jean-claude; Nival, Paul.
The dispersal of Pectinaria koreni larvae released from the eastern Bay of Seine (English Channel) was studied using a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model which integrates tides, wind-driven currents and eddy diffusion, in order to examine the influence of environmental forcing and mortality on larval population dynamics. A broad agreement between predicted larval dispersal for two spawning events observed in 1987 and field data suggests that numerical modelling may be useful to analyse processes involved in the transport and the dynamics of larval populations. Larval mortality may be as important as hydrodynamic processes on larval losses for the adult population. Tides and eddy diffusion had some effects on larval dispersal, but wind forcing and the...

A MULTI-COUNTRY ASSESSMENT OF CONSUMER ATTITUDES OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR NEW LABELING SYSTEM AgEcon
Kim, Hyun Seok; Kim, Kwansoo.
This paper estimates the willingness to pay (WTP) for non-genetically modified (GM) vegetable oil and tofu in Korea by using contingent valuation (CV) method and compares this WTP with Japan, Norway, Taiwan and the U.S. It also recovers the distribution of WTP by using a bootstrapping approach to provide a better measure of consumer's WTP on non-GM foods. Especially, we pay attention to the different characteristics of vegetable oil and tofu; vegetable oil made from GM soybeans doesn't have genetically altered protein, but tofu made from GM soybean has genetically altered protein. For this reason, vegetable oil made from GM soybeans is excluded from mandatory GM labeling system in Korea. Therefore, in this paper, the potential differences between WTP for...

A MULTINOMIAL LOGIT MODEL OF CONSUMER PERCEPTIONS FOR BIOTECH FOOD LABELING AgEcon
Han, Jae-Hwan; Harrison, R. Wes.
A multinomial logit analysis is employed to analyze consumers' perceptions about purchasing biotech foods and their preferences for mandatory and voluntary labeling. Results showed that consumers who are sensitive to the possible side effects of biotech crops on wildlife and the environment are more likely to support a mandatory labeling policy. Results also indicated that respondents who believe biotech foods may have unforeseen health risks are more likely to favor mandatory labeling. Furthermore, the study found that respondents who are willing to buy a meat product produced using biotechnology are more likely to favor a voluntary labeling policy.
